October 16, 2022 by The Housemistress Leave a Comment

We may not be able to come up with mouthwatering dishes like those great chefs. But cooking for our daily meals is actually not very difficult. What takes up a lot of time is the food preparation before the actual cooking begins. And part of that involves cutting, dicing and slicing.

So, apart from a good set of knives, some simple gadgets are pretty handy when it comes to helping us with cutting up ingredients. Not all of us have steady hands to cut up ingredients into perfectly shaped portions. For example, how to slice onions and tomatoes evenly when you have problems holding them down firmly all the way to the end?

Coming up with more presentable food doesn’t need to cost you an arm and a leg. The cheap holder and slicer above is just one example of how you can get evenly sliced onions, tomatoes, lemons, apples, and even cheese. Sometimes, it is better to just use this than bringing out the bulky chopping and slicing equipment hiding somewhere inside your kitchen cabinet.

There is also no necessity to directly hold the food as you slice. This means you won’t accidentally cut your finger when using the knife. At the end of the process, the washing up is also much simpler unlike using those expensive equipment.

I guess some things need not be made complicated. All you want is just to slice the onions and tomatoes evenly. It is not a hard thing to do even without a slicer. Adding one to the process is just to quicken the pace and ensure the thickness is more uniform. And you can also use it as a meat tenderizer to add to its versatility.

Features Of The Onion Slicer

There are different variations to this type of slicer. Some are made of stainless steel throughout while others have a plastic handle. Take note of the size of the handle as you would want it to be comfortable enough for a firm grip.

The length of the prongs may also differ from brand to brand. Longer ones would be better to ensure it has enough length to keep the food in place while there is still adequate room to maneuver the knife.

Then, the distance between the prongs will also have a bearing on the thickness of the slices. The number of prongs and the sturdiness are the other factors to be taken into consideration when you buy.

Apart from the slicer with tines above, there are also variations to this simple cutting aid. Rather than using tines to poke into the food, some people would prefer a jaw-like design. After all, foods like tomatoes are juicy and poking into them may not be ideal.

Hence, a better way is to trap the round-shaped food between the jaws and then slice it through the dividers. You will still be able to slice your tomatoes evenly with this aid which is also as affordable as a tined slicer.

The alternative design to this is in the form of a pair of tongs. You have a round-shaped holder at the end with the same dividers for even slicing. I think this is actually harder to control because when the tongs opened up, the alignment of the dividers on both sides may be off compared to when it is closed.

In conclusion, there are ways on how to slice onions and tomatoes evenly like a pro. You don’t need to invest in an expensive cutting machine. Just a simple slicer will do. And you are not limited to slicing onions and tomatoes. You can use it for any similar shaped foods and vegetables. Unless you are slicing huge volumes, this should work well for daily home use.
